ACT Controls without UpdatePanel?

Hello, Is there a way to use the ACT (AjaxControlToolkit) controls without an UpdatePanel? I would like to use some of the controls with a standard WebService, however I am not able to see how I can achive that. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks
